Sligo Deaths Suspect Yousef Palani Arrested

Yousef Palani of Markievicz Heights, Sligo, was remanded in custody after appearing at Sligo District Court on charges of murdering Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee and assaulting another man.

Palani came before Judge Sandra Murphy, where his lawyer, Gerry McGovern, demanded a “immediate” mental evaluation and placement on suicide watch while he was in detention.

He was transported to court in the back of a police van after a large mob lined the streets between Sligo Garda Station and the courthouse. Palani has been remanded in custody and will appear in court via video connection on April 21.

On Tuesday night, Michael Snee, 58, was discovered dead in his Sligo townhome, while Aidan Moffitt, 42, was discovered dead on Monday night.

On Saturday, April 9, the accused was charged with a third offence of assaulting Mr. Anthony Burke on Cleveragh Road.

The accused, clothed in a grey tracksuit, black runners, and wearing a beard, sat in a serious courtroom with his hands clinched as the allegations were read out. No request for bail was made.

His defense attorney sought that the accused be evaluated by a prison psychiatrist or taken to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum.

Judge Murphy granted his motion and ordered that all necessary medical treatment be provided to the accused.

Palani was granted legal aid since he was unemployed and unable to deal with the charges without it, according to the court.

Yousef Palani, who is accused of killing Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee in Sligo, was charged with assaulting a third man and causing harm. This charge has now been changed to attempted murder against the third man.

At Sligo District Court this morning, Mr. Palani, who is 22 years old and lives in Markievicz Heights, was brought before Judge Sandra Murphy.

He has been in jail since April 14, when a special meeting of the Sligo District Court charged him with two counts of murder and one count of assaulting Anthony Burke in a way that hurt him.

Today, Sergeant Derek Butler told Judge Murphy that the DPP has asked for Mr. Palani to be tried at the Central Criminal Court for killing Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee and trying to kill Anthony Burke.

Mr. Palani was led into the courtroom by two prison officers. He was wearing grey track pants and a padded green and black jacket.

Anthony Burke, the man he is said to have hurt, was in court for the short hearing.

Garda At 10:52 a.m., Kevin O’Hora testified at Sligo Court House about the accused person’s arrest, charge, and warning.

Garda O’Hora told Judge Murphy that the copy of the charge he gave to the accused was a true copy. Garda O’Hora told the judge, “He didn’t say anything back.”

Sgt. Derek Butler told Judge Murphy that a single count of assaulting Anthony Burke and hurting him on Cleveragh Road in Sligo on April 9, 2022, should be dropped and replaced with a charge of attempted murder for the same event.

“That count has been changed by the new charge,” Sgt. Butler told Judge Murphy.

He asked that the accused person stay locked up until September 22, 2022.

Judge Murphy agreed to the request and said that she thought the book of evidence would not be ready on that date. This was agreed upon by Sgt. Butler.

During the whole hearing, Mr. Palani never showed any emotion and spent most of it with his head down.

At a previous hearing, Mr. Palani’s lawyer, Mr. Gerry McGovern, asked why it was taking so long to get instructions from the DPP and said that his client has been in jail since April 14.

Sgt. Butler had said before that the delay was because the case was “very complex” and there was a lot of information in the file.

He said, “The file is so big that it had to be printed at Garda headquarters.”

Yousef Palani has been charged with killing two men and hurting another man over the course of three days from April 9 to April 12 in different places in Sligo town. This is the seventh time he has been in court since being charged.

Aidan Moffitt, an auctioneer and political activist who was 41 years old, was killed at his home in Cartron Heights, Sligo town, on April 10, 2022. The 22-year-old man is charged with killing Moffitt.

He was also accused of killing retired care worker Michael Snee, 58, on April 12, 2022, at the City View Apartments in Sligo.

A man who was already accused of killing two other people in Sligo in April has been charged with attempted murder again.

Yousef Palani, who lives in Markievicz Heights, Sligo, is 22 years old. On Thursday, September 15, at 10:52 a.m., Garda Kevin O’Hora arrested him at Sligo Courthouse and gave him a copy of a charge for trying to kill Mr. Anthony Burke on April 9 on Cleveragh Road, Sligo.

The new charge is a more serious version of an earlier assault charge, which was that Mr. Burke was hurt seriously on purpose or by accident, which is against section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offenses Against the Person Act.

Palani was then brought before Sligo District Court Judge Sandra Murphy, where Garda O’Hora testified about Palani’s arrest, charges, and warning.

Mr. Burke sat in the public gallery of the courthouse with a friend. From there, he watched the case against his alleged attacker.

Sergeant Derek Butler told the court that the DPP had ordered prosecution on indictment of the two existing murder charges and the new charge of attempted murder. This means that the case will go to the Central Criminal Court.

Sgt. Butler told Judge Murphy that the new charge of attempted murder could replace the old charge of assault.

Then, Judge Murphy threw out the charge of assault and said that any request for bail on the charge of attempted murder would have to be made in the High Court.

Sgt. Derek Butler asked the court to put Palani’s case off until September 22 so that the new attempted murder charge’s book of evidence could be served.

Judge Murphy said that Palani probably wouldn’t get the book of evidence on the new charge by that date. However, he agreed to keep Palani in jail on all three charges and have him appear by video link from Castlerea Prison, where he has been since his arrest in April.

Mr. Gerard McGovern, Palani’s lawyer, asked the court for help for Palani with the new charge of attempted murder. The judge agreed to help Palani with his case.

The man who is accused of killing Michael Snee, Aidan Moffitt, and Anthony Burke and assaulting him in a way that hurt him has been locked up again. Yousef Palani went to Sligo District Court for the sixth time via Zoom on August 24. He called in from Castlerea Prison, where he has been held since April 14, when he was charged.

During the trial, Sergeant Derek Burke asked that the accused be kept in jail until September 15, when he hoped the Director of Public Prosecutions would give him instructions (DPP). Gerry McGovern, the lawyer for the 22-year-old, asked why it had taken so long for the DPP to tell them what would happen next. Sgt. Butler said that the delay was because the case was “very complex” and there was a lot of information in the file.

“The file is so big that it needed to be printed at Garda headquarters,” he said.

“There has never been a case like this before,” Sgt. Butler said, but he added that the “huge” file is now with the DPP and the Garda are waiting for orders. He said that he was sure the DPP would be able to move the case forward by September 15, but that it would take longer to put together the book of evidence.

Mr. McGovern emphasized how important it was to move the case forward and said that Palani had not been able to talk to senior council yet.

When it comes to bail, the accused “hasn’t decided yet” if he will ask for it or not, and his lawyer confirmed that this is something they are still talking about.

Palani will have to stay in Castlerea prison until September 15, 2022, when he will have to go back to the Sligo District Court. Judge Brendan O’Reilly also confirmed that the case has been marked peremptory against the State, which means that the charges could be dropped if a decision is not made on that date.
